How To Travel Light Long Term: 20 Tips + Packing Checklist

Why Packing Light Changes Everything

There is a before and after moment for most long-term travelers: the moment they stop checking luggage. Suddenly, airports become easy. Buses become easy. Spontaneous decisions — jumping on a local train, staying an extra night, moving on tomorrow — become easy. Everything becomes easier when your life fits in one bag on your back.

Here are 20 tested tips to help you get there, plus a complete packing checklist at the end.

The Golden Rule: If in Doubt, Leave It Out

Every item you pack should earn its place. Ask: will I use this at least once a week? If not, it does not come. You can buy almost anything you need on the road — often cheaper than at home.

Tips 1–5: Clothing

1. Pack for 7 days, wash weekly. You do not need 3 weeks of clothes. You need 7 days' worth and access to laundry.

2. Choose neutral, mix-and-match colours. Navy, grey, black, white, and olive all work together. Avoid patterns that only go with one thing.

3. Merino wool over cotton. Merino wool is lightweight, odour-resistant, quick-drying, and works in hot and cold climates. One merino t-shirt can be worn 3–4 days before washing.

4. One pair of shoes, one pair of sandals. Your shoes should be comfortable enough for walking all day and smart enough for a nice restaurant.

5. A packable rain jacket counts as your coat. A lightweight packable jacket weighs 300g and keeps you dry. Leave the heavy coat at home.

Tips 6–10: Tech and Documents

6. Use your phone as your camera. Modern smartphones take excellent photos. Leave the DSLR unless photography is your primary purpose.

7. A universal travel adapter is essential. One small universal adapter is all you need.

8. Download everything offline. Maps (Google Maps or Maps.me), translation apps, and entertainment — all downloadable before you lose Wi-Fi.

9. Scan all documents and store in the cloud. Passport, visa, insurance, driving licence. If your bag is stolen, you still have access to everything.

10. A small portable charger is non-negotiable. 10,000–20,000mAh is enough for 2–3 full phone charges.

Tips 11–15: Toiletries and Health

11. Solid toiletries save space and pass security. Solid shampoo, conditioner, and soap bars take up a fraction of the space of bottles and are never confiscated at airport security.

12. Buy sunscreen and insect repellent at your destination. They're cheaper, bulky, and available everywhere.

13. A basic first aid kit in a small pouch. Plasters, painkillers, anti-diarrhea tablets, rehydration sachets, and a small bandage.

14. A microfibre towel dries in 30 minutes. Compact, quick-drying, and far superior to a regular towel for travel.

15. One small padlock for hostel lockers. Many hostels provide lockers but not padlocks.

Tips 16–20: Packing Strategy

16. Use packing cubes. They compress clothing and keep your bag organised. You can find your t-shirts without unpacking everything.

17. Roll, don't fold. Rolling clothes saves space and reduces wrinkles.

18. Pack heavy items close to your back. Weight distribution matters for comfort on long walking days.

19. Weigh your bag before you leave. Target: under 10kg for a carry-on. Under 7kg if you want to always avoid checked luggage fees.

20. Do a trial run. Pack everything, put the bag on, and walk for 20 minutes. Whatever hurts, reconsider.
